Florence, Italy – Overview

The birthplace of Renaissance, the Italian city of Florence, though hasn’t changed much in the last 700 years but has been playing an instrumental role in changing how we see the world. Known for its phenomenal art and big palaces, which have been feeding the imaginations of great writers, authors, and travelers over the years, Florence, with its muted colors and traditional outlook, never appears showy despite being extraordinary. And though sometimes it does not look that great to the eyes, it fully deserves the title of the ‘City of Dreams’ to the hilt. You will have to see the view as the sun sets over the Arno to understand the aptness and the depth of the title, which is bestowed upon Florence.

Places To See in Florence, Italy

Galleria Degli Uffizi

The Galleria Degli Uffizi is housed in the building, which was once the place where the administrative offices of ‘Medici grand duke Cosimo I’ used to be held from 1519 through 1574. Designed by Giorgio Vasari (1511–74), the two-story building, called Palazzo degli Uffizi, was later converted into a museum by the Medici family themselves. Now, it is home to the family-owned artworks. Open since 1594, it became the first European museum, which was open to the public. Some of the highlights of the museum include the works like Paolo Uccello's Battle of San Romano, Fra Filippo Lippi’s ‘the Madonna and Child with Two Angels’, and Sandro Botticelli’s ‘the Birth of Venus and Primavera’.

Museo Horne

The castle ‘Museo Horne’ – now a museum – was once inhabited by a highly talented Englishman called Herbert P. Horne, who was not only an art historian but also an art collector and an architect. The land where the building stands is said to have been occupied by other structures in the early 14th century, and the present structure came into being in the 15th century. It is the place where Horne is said to have spent most of his life, and though the collection except the works of Giotto's St. Stephen can’t be termed as great, we must say that you should visit it if only to see its vintage furnishings like the 15th-century lettuccio (divan).
