Places To Visit in Palermo

Palazzo Dei Normanni (Norman Palace)

The Norman Palace was originally built by the Arabs, for their Emir, in the 9th century, and was later revamped by the Norman rulers, then by Hohenstaufen Frederick II and lastly by the Spanish Viceroy. Thanks to these renovations, the palace looks awe-inspiring. The present day, the regional parliament of Sicily sits at the Palazzo Dei Normanni.

Archaeological Museum

Palermo’s Archeological Museum houses a vast collection of antiquities, which are one of the finest in Italy. The collection includes several artifacts sourced from around the world. Having said that, the ground-floor of museum showcases relics from various cultures, the next floor showcases magnificent pottery items while the last floor includes some major portraits and prehistoric stone objects.

Catacombe Dei Cappuccini

Catacombe Dei Cappuccini aka Capuchin Abbey is an unusual yet one of the most popular attractions of Palermo. Widely known for its catacombs, the Abbey was carved in the volcanic rock in the year of 1599 and used as a burial ground until the year of 1881. These catacombs greet people with a grisly scene of over 8,000 mummified corpses, which had been arranged on the basis of sex and status.

Quattro Canti

Quattro Canti Square is a beautiful open space at the junction of Palermo's two major streets namely, Cassaro and Via Nuova (later renamed Maqueda in honor of the Spanish viceroy.) Designed by the Roman architect Giulio Lasso, it was laid out between the years of 1608 and 1620. Talking about design, each corner of the square features a concave frontage, with a fountain on the ground level followed by beautifully sculpted figures on the three floors above.
